Paolo Ulian for Bufalini
Paolo Ulian studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara and then at the ISIA in Florence, where he graduated in industrial design in 1990. From 1990 to 1991, he worked as an assistant in Enzo Mari's studio. His artistic research often focuses on the ethical and social aspects of design, considering them essential references in his work. He loves investigating people's gestures and habits, proposing new types of objects that straddle seemingly distant and irreconcilable functions. He experiments with various natural materials, including white Carrara marble, seeking to understand their intrinsic structural and aesthetic potential, often starting from semi-finished waste destined for landfill.
In 2000, he exhibited at the Salone Satellite, where he won first prize Design Report Award. In 2009, Beppe Finessi curated his first solo exhibition at the Fabbrica del Vapore, and the following year another solo exhibition curated by Enzo Mari and titled "Between Game and Landfill" was held at the Milan Triennale. He has collaborated with Droog Design and several Italian companies such as Driade, Fontana Arte, Danese, Bufalini, Zava Luce, Antonio Lupi, Alessi, Cassina. In 2020, he designed the installation for Enzo Mari's latest retrospective exhibition at the Milan Triennale, curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist. Some of his projects have entered the permanent collections of the Triennale Design Museum, the London Design Museum, and the Montreal Museum of Fine Art.
