5th March 2025
Masao (Zhengxiong) Rong is a designer and artist who emphasises the importance of practical making processes as a means of preserving human subjectivity in a capitalist world that often diminishes individual identity. A Masters graduate in Design Products at the RCA in London, Masao previously earned a BA in Engineering Mechanics from Beihang University in China. His work is rooted in ideological critiques of industrial society, exploring innovative production methods and fostering public engagement to drive social change.

Masao draws inspiration from crafting traditions and folk activities, believing that these spontaneous practices, rooted in specific social contexts, reflect the authentic experiences of everyday life.

The Tree furniture series is made from coppiced sweet chestnut wood sustainably sourced in Surrey. Each object is made from one single tree trunk, hand-split, and joined by local coppice workers. Finished with layers of lacquer and then sanded to smooth, the natural texture of the wood is preserved.
