Zoë Slater is a ceramic artist whose work explores tactile, sculptural forms using dark clay bodies and reactive glazes. Drawing inspiration from plant biology and the natural environment, Slater uses the raw, earthy qualities of materials, allowing their inherent properties to shape the final form.
Abscission was constructed intuitively, beginning with a thrown form, and augmented organically to evoke a soft, natural feeling. The form suggests shedding, like plant leaves blown away by the wind. The exterior is scraped to reveal the raw texture of the clay, exposing the small stones within, emphasising its tactile quality and inviting touch. The title refers to the natural process by which plants shed parts such as leaves, flowers, or seeds.
