Liu Kim (b. 1995, Seoul, South Korea) questions social norms through the physical properties of clay, such as tearing and cracking, which are typically seen as defects. She is attracted to ceramics due to the resemblance between the transformative properties of clay under varying temperatures and the way our appearances change depending on the environment. She believes that seeking new meanings beyond the existing ones is a fundamental essence of art and considers soil to be the most appropriate medium to express this. She primarily creates her works through plaster casting. By innovatively reinterpreting the traditional casting methods used in industrial ceramics, which usually produce identical forms repeatedly, the artist generates unique surface textures and forms that are distorted and collapsed. Therefore, her ceramic aims to transcend the conventional industrial use of ceramics, instead seeking to express the intrinsic qualities of clay in a new form of contemporary art.
