Aurelia

Zoë Slater is a ceramic artist whose work explores tactile, sculptural forms using dark clay bodies and reactive glazes. Drawing inspiration from plant biology and the natural environment, Slater uses the raw, earthy qualities of materials, allowing their inherent properties to shape the final form.
Aurelia is a thrown vessel made from black stoneware, finished with a manganese-saturated glaze. The piece features protective, ridged protrusions that suggest armour or defensive growth. These nodules are pushed from the inside out, altering the form and creating a dynamic texture that contrasts with the smoothness of the vessel’s surface. The interaction between rough clay and oxide rich glaze evokes a sense of resilience and protective strength.
