Coral Decay

Chloe Hicks

  • Description
  • Specifications

As a designer-maker, Chloe draws constant inspiration from the art of nature, particularly the organic growth, patterns, shapes, colours, and textures found in the natural world, which serve as a wellspring of ideas. With a deep love for nature, she is concerned about the negative impact of climate change on the environment, especially on aquatic ecosystems. Her work reflects this, highlighting the effects of human actions on marine life. For example, coral, vital to marine biodiversity, is being bleached by climate change, leading to a decline in coral reefs. She is fascinated by how much an object can be abstracted while still maintaining its functionality. Her use of crater glazes, along with natural and aquatic-coloured oxides and carbonates, evokes the textures and colours of decaying coral and rocks, mirroring the impact of environmental degradation.
