Zoë Slater is a ceramic artist whose work explores tactile, sculptural forms using dark clay bodies and reactive glazes. Drawing inspiration from plant biology and the natural environment, Slater uses the raw, earthy qualities of materials, allowing their inherent properties to shape the final form.
Coral Growths explores the tension between deliberate construction and material transformation. Crawling, cratered, and glossy glazes interact unpredictably in the kiln, creating textures that evoke organic accretions and the development of coral. The work reflects themes of water and fecundity, capturing the slow, transformative processes found in nature. The piece embodies the dynamic relationship between the maker’s intent and the spontaneous behaviours of the materials, mirroring the unpredictable growth and resilience of underwater ecosystems.
