Zoë Slater is a ceramic artist whose work explores tactile, sculptural forms using dark clay bodies and reactive glazes. Drawing inspiration from plant biology and the natural environment, Slater uses the raw, earthy qualities of materials, allowing their inherent properties to shape the final form.
Dehiscence begins with a thrown form, to which slabs of varying widths are attached to create layered protrusions. Inspired by the protective spikes of sea urchins, the harsh geometry of the form contrasts with the organic, encrusted surface created by layers of crawling glazes. The title, drawn from biology, refers to the splitting open of a plant structure to release its contents: seeds, pollen, or spores. The vessel, contained within its protective layers, evokes the image of a conker, safeguarding what lies within until the moment of release.
