Akiko Hirai is a Japanese ceramic artist who initially studied cognitive psychology before moving to the UK, where she trained in ceramics at the University of Westminster and Central Saint Martins. Her practice explores the relationship between object and viewer, allowing meaning to emerge through interaction.
Inspired by Korean Moon Jars, this series explores ageing, memory, and transformation through surfaces marked by time, where each imperfection becomes a record of lived experience. The Dormant Moon Jars, finished in dry earthy tones, reflect on emotional processing and resilience, using sleep as a metaphor for absorbing and softening life’s intensity rather than erasing it. Rooted in reflections on conflict, memory, and renewal, the works imagine a space of collective rest where forgiveness and understanding can emerge while still holding onto the traces of the past.
