The meaning of “Han-ttam” is stitch in Korean. It is also related to blue-print work. Chaeeun’s Han-ttam Collection builds a connection between the ubiquitous textile denim and the ceramic material porcelain. The collection is inspired by the imbalance of access to and usage of water across the world is imbalanced and the forms and delights of the human body. The forms are designed to be held comfortably under an arm. The vases riff on body shapes, offering forms held in an unpredictable balance, atypical when viewed from all sides. The stitches that appear in the collection begin along the lines of joint and casting lines, resembling the way draping takes place or sewing patterns are made. The ‘blue stitches’ simulate our planning ideals of a ‘blue-print’ pattern making underscored by fabric elements representative of the pollution of dyeing processes.
