The cross quarter festival of Bealtaine signifies the return of the sacred light as the Earth begins to ripen in all her splendour. Historically celebrated by the Celts and typically marked on 1st May, it marks the midpoint between the Spring Equinox and Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere.
This symbolic casting off of darkness and letting in of the light at the start of May finds its origins in this ancient festival that has been celebrated for thousands of years. As far back as the Iron Age, Celts came together to celebrate Summer’s return.
This is the time on the Celtic wheel when the Sun and the Earth become one - when union abounds, and when celebrations of the warming earth take place. We walk through the trees at the height of their colour - to connect deeply with their wisdom and wonder.
Today, we can look to the traditions of the past and mark them in our own, modern ways; a chance to pause and take stock, to notice nature around us and to celebrate the turn of the seasons.
