'Transcending: Mesh to Matter' explores the intersection of digital technology and physical craft from a maker's perspective. The project takes research into references gathered in the physical realm but is formed within a digital environment. Using virtual reality, 3D mesh models are sculpted and carefully refined by hand to achieve a distinctive aesthetic.
After this, they are transitioned from the digital realm into the physical world through the process of 3D printing a mother mold. This mold has been thoroughly analyzed by the maker to ensure it is suitable for slipcasting. From this mother mold, the traditional ceramic craft of slip casting begins in the physical world by creating multi-part plaster molds and pouring liquid clay into them. The pieces are then finished with a gradually pixelated underglaze by hand, signifying the transition from the digital realm to the physical material. Finally, they are glazed with a transparent finish and fired. The resulting vessels display markings of artisanally crafted ceramics, infused with digital influences. Transcending the boundaries between virtual and physically tangible realms.
'Transcending: Mesh to Matter' is a thoughtful exploration of digital and traditional art and design. It pays tribute to the importance of handcrafted items, while offering a glimpse into what is possible when the physical and digital realms collide.
