Sho-Woo Lee explores the material similarities between clay, glaze, metal, and enamel, using the latter two to engage with East Asian ceramic traditions. Inspired by the Japanese tea ceremony, or "Teaism," he embraces its aesthetic ideals, particularly Wabi-sabi (侘寂) and Yūgen (幽玄, subtle profundity). Lee’s practice focuses on the Sinosphere, investigating the shared cultural heritage of East Asia and how these traditions have been transmitted and interpreted across the region. History, tradition, and cultural exchange are central to his research and artistic approach.
