Coal Gangue Clay, Bacterial Pigment from S.coelicolor
Made In China, transforms coal gangue, a waste product of China’s coal industry, into ceramic clay and combines it with the pigment-producing soil bacterium Streptomyces coelicolor. The resulting blue pigments interact with the pale clay, reinterpreting traditional Chinese blue-and-white porcelain, or Qīng huā cí, as a living ceramic surface. Using bio-design and microorganisms, the work challenges Qīng huā cí as a fixed symbol of Chinese heritage while exploring new possibilities for industrial waste and material value.
