Since discovering meditation in 2020, Zen practice has become the spiritual foundation of Hsiao’s artistic creation. This ongoing journey has not only reshaped Hsiao’s creative perspective but also led him to realise that authentic artistic expression is an external manifestation of the artist's inner cultivation—each work serves as a tangible imprint of a stage in this practice, extending the self while simultaneously transcending it.
Self-Portrait Series draws its inspiration from Zen meditation experiences in the mountains. Hsaio simplified and abstracted the serene posture of meditation, transforming it into lines and forms filled with Zen sensibility. The surface of the work features a unique texture inspired by monastic robes. When the light is lit, the flame cast a unique silhouette on the bronze surface. Hsiao’s intention is when the viewer stand in front of it, the patterns and fire serving as a gentle reminder: let go of distractions and embrace the tranquility of the present moment.
