Black copper wire
The Wire Moon Jar by Karen Lechelt is a contemporary sculptural vessel that reimagines the traditional Korean moon jar through the Joseon dynasty horsehair crocheting technique, meticulously recreated in black copper wire. Handcrafted through a slow, repetitive process requiring exceptional precision and dexterity, each piece is entirely unique, balancing strength with an ethereal sense of fragility.
Drawing on Lechelt's experience as a Korean-American adoptee, the work explores themes of identity, belonging, family and cultural inheritance, transforming a historic Korean form into a deeply personal expression of diaspora. Both elegant and playful, open yet enclosed, the Wire Moon Jar is a striking meditation on memory, resilience and the evolving nature of contemporary Korean identity.
