Aya Kawabata reconsiders textile tradition by creating each piece as a singular, fully composed artwork. Drawing on Japanese practices such as kimono and obi, she unites structure, image, and material into a cohesive whole. Working with just five thread colours, Kawabata creates depth through subtle variations in colour and structure, incorporating elements such as the selvedge to challenge conventional ideas of value and waste.
