This painting of two lovers embracing is by Reza Abbasi (1565–1635), who revolutionised Persian painting. Signed by the artist centre left, it was done toward the end of his long, successful career at the Safavid court. The subject reflects the newly relaxed attitude to sensuality introduced during the reign of Shah Safi (r. 1629–42) who followed Shah Abbas I (r. 1588-1629). The painting is now in the possession of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City.
